Summer television used to be an interesting time of the year. While the airwaves were generally filled with failed shows, they were interesting failed shows. US series that never lasted beyond an initial 13 episode commitment, sitcoms that were awful (*cough* Perfect Strangers *cough*), and quirky oddities that would simply never get a run during ratings periods.

In 2010, we’re just seeing a run of repeats and archive shows dredged up from the depths of network archives. Really, could anyone have expected Channel 10 to start screening Malcolm In The Middle so prominently on their schedules?

In this day and age of the Internet, the notion of summer TV discovery seems to be a thing of the past.

While you ponder the loss of televisions innocence, here are a few articles that you may find interesting:

The Conan v NBC business continues behind the scenes while the Hollywood gossip industry continues to speculate. What is interesting, is that TMZ have discovered the origin of the Leno at 10pm idea.

And while on the subject of late night TV, you may enjoy the last episode of Late Night w/David letterman.

The fact that Mark Valley has a new show is awesome. Human Target, a revamp of the early 90′s Rick Springfield show, launched on Fox this week. Take a read what Daniel Feinberg had to say about it and then download one of the DC comics that the show is based on.

While watching all of those Hitler meme videos online, have you ever considered what the director of Downfall thinks of it all? Wonder no longer as Oliver Hirschbiegel goes public. You should also take the effort to see the film. It’s a grim affair and well worth your time.

Carey Mulligan and campaigning for an Oscar nomination.

What happens when your TV series wraps up earlier than desired? Like Joss Whedon, you take the occasional lunch.

Matthew Weiner has advised that fans don’t try and emulate Don Draper. Does this mean I should stop drinking scotch at work?

First Person Tetris is awesome.

Joss Whedon (Firefly, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Angel) has created a new series for 20th Century Fox starring Eliza Dushku. With a convoluted plot that seems reminiscent of the oft-maligned Christian Slater series My Own Worst Enemy, Dollhouse is set to launch mid-season in January.

All of that said, I’ve mostly liked Joss’ work and will give this a go when it does premiere. But lordy, do they really have to use such a tired-sounding chick-rock track over this preview?

On the plus side, the show does feature Olivia Williams. *swoon*

The TV Rev podcast is back for another week.
Another week, another complaint about Tivo. Regardless how they spin it, it just doesn’t look like value for money.
As well as bitching about Tivo, Dan and Simon discuss:
*The cancellation of Out of the Blue.
*Where to find women. HINT: It may involve watching TV.
*Brisbane’s Can’t Stop The Serenity screening.
*Perth saves its Channel 31.
