One HD Scores launch date

Channel 10 have announced that their 24/7 sports channel One HD will launch on March 26 at 7:30pm.

One HD will replace the previously branded Ten HD, and offer the sports channel in HD and on a standard definition channel. So, as it stands, Channel Tens services will be:

Channel Ten (SD)
One HD (HD)
One (SD)

As stated previously, I am not a sports guy by any means, but Channel Tens commitment to launching a sports channel is mighty clever. With viewing audiences seeking television programing from other sources (DVD, the Internet, PVR’s, etc) and effectively time-shifting, the future of broadcast television is content for which it is imperative to watch live. An all-sports channel is an obvious choice, especially with Channel 10 boosting their sports coverage in recent years by obtaining a multitude of less mainstream, but still prominent sporting events.

American Football - Soon to be a One HD staple

The solid launch date does raise a few interesting questions.

By restricting Channel Tens signal to being purely standard definition digital, does that seriously undermine the value that the network place on the service? That said, HD broadcasting hasn’t exactually matured yet in Australia with few understanding the differences between analog and digital, SD and HD. Ten really need to start educating the public on these differences and exactly how people can start accessing this new sports service. Heck, SD STB’s can be bought cheaply from the local Coles.

Also, have Channel 10 wasted money in upgrading all of their studios to be HD compliant? Obviously the Sydney studios would need to be for Sports Tonight (of which will undoubtedly be One HD’s flagship program), but would it really have been necessary to upgrade studios to HD in markets such as Brisbane and Adelaide?

Will Channel 10 be showing One HD live in every market, or will there be a time delay? One would assume that it would be live, but surely more revenue can be generated by showing sporting matches in prime time slots. I believe every market will be running local advertising and will not have a national signal (as opposed to the way that Foxtel broadcast the exact same channel nationally, advertising and all). My understanding is that it will all be live, but it would be nice to see some clarification relating to this specifically.

Australians love their sport and I have no doubt that One HD will boost the sale of digital STB’s and HD televisions. Its great to see an Australian broadcaster actually make a bold move towards providing multi-channel entertainment.

I think its awesome what channel 10 are doing but what are the other channels doing?

Channel Ten have been the only station to firmly announce their intentions for their first multi-channel.

There was an announcement from someone involved with Freeview (I forget who exactly) that said the multi-channels would be rolled out one by one between March and the end of June.

I still would have expected to hear some whispers as to exactly what Nine and Seven are up to by now…

Ten upgrading Brisbane? TVQ needs a new set, badly! It’s bad at 5, and it’s worse at 7pm, when the ABC run their news from TVQ’s set.

  4. Bluegirl says:

What will happen to other HD shows that are now featured on 10 HD like movies etc.?

  5. Dan Barrett says:

You can pretty much say goodbye to them. It seriously undermines the value Channel Ten are placing on their primary channel.

I don’t know if I’ll even bother to check out Tens sport channel, ever. In fact, free tv is really really dead by now, and even shows I used to like feel like their written by Newscorp of Fairfax webbots. Well not that bad..Comedy? Other than watching bruse page talk to Wally (hey wally mate!), would like some larfs…Chasers’ back in a few months at least.

    List of my recent disapointments:
Dr Who: had a distinct sharky smell approaching – then Tennent jumped like all the rest

House: guilty of recycling plots, tedious cameron/aussie bloke affair, now whiffy sharkish air around Cuddy’s baby

Lost: Reeks appallingly of fish. Long since jumped, lost viewers with over mystification BS, yet they go with more annoying ‘puzzles’. The boardshorts came out in series two and have never come off.

It’s gotten so bad that that was my ‘must watch’ list. How sad…

Despite all the advertisements highlighting how great the free-to-air ONE will be, Tasmania will be missing out (as will Darwin from stories I’ve read). So we’ve had to endure the bloody sports ads all summer and now we don’t even get the bloody channel.

To be honest, I probably would barely watch the channel anyway, but when you advertise something, and virtually the rest of the country gets it, to stiff a state in such a way is an insult. Sure, sure, blame the affiliate that carries TenHD into Tassie, it still stings like a slap to the face (or pains the ego).

they picked some pretty shitty sports for this channel……i mean c’mon im pretty sure not all of australia wants to see bloody homo sports like afl and golf …

we need A league, premier league, nba, indian premier league……

put some table tennis on please!

Yes. Some table tennis would be fantastic.
