Channel 9 – Curb Your Audiences Enthusiasm

Seinfeld is one of the finest TV series that the medium has produced. The Seinfeld reunion story arc on Curb Your Enthusiasm this season is inspired genius. Televised Revolution reviewed the first episode of the Seinfeld Reunion arc and could not give it higher praise. Tonight Channel 9 are screening the Seinfeld Reunion Special.

Don’t watch it.

Channel 9 are doing their viewers a complete disservice this evening by screening this episode out of order and completely out of context.

The episode doesn’t require much knowledge of the show (though, it would certainly help to be familiar the tone of the show going into it). Most Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes are fairly standalone. The episode going to air is not the ‘Seinfeld Reunion Show’. It is the first episode of a season-long arc that relates to Larry producing the Seinfeld Reunion special. Yes, the Seinfeld cast are all in it, but most viewers will walk away from the episode feeling largely unfulfilled by the experience. They won’t see the Seinfeld sets, they won’t see any of the production meetings, they won’t see the Seinfeld cast making the special.

I understand that Channel 9 want to cash in on some solid audience numbers for this product that otherwise doesn’t deliver strong ratings. And that’s fine. What they should have done is be honest with the audience in their marketing of this. Or, just held off until there are more episodes of the reunion arc ready to be screened. As it stands, this episode of Curb aired three weeks ago in the US. The two episodes that aired since have been completely unconnected to the Seinfeld arc.

Channel 9 have a great 30 minute episode of the show which is the entry point for an incredibly novel storyarc. Instead they’re ruining its value. They are dressing up a product and selling it to the audience under false pretenses.

It’s disheartening. The show and audience deserve better than what they’re being given tonight.

    Totally agree.

  2. Sean says:

I don’t get it. You say it’s the first episode yet 9 are showing it out of order?

What episode is someone meant to watch before this?

  3. Dan says:

It’s the third episode of the season, but the first proper episode of the Seinfeld reunion arc.

As a “Seinfeld Reunion Special”, this really isn’t fulfilling in any possible way. It’s just the start of a multi-episode arc.

  4. salty says:

You know, I had hoped you’d posted about this. It was the first I’d seen of it advertised tonight when my girlfriend told me it was on.

What in the hell are Channel 9 doing? Seriously?

  5. Anders says:

Online guide didn’t even list it as a CYE episode (Nine again?). GO is screening (I guess) the prior season.

Come to think of it, Nine never cared about screening this show in any special order before, if you cared to catch it at 2.36am mondays.

  6. Jenna says:

I don’t agreee. It was a great idea to only show the episodes with Seinfeld. Most people wouldn’t want to watch the series other wise.

  7. Dan says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’d have had no problem if Ch 9 aired only the Seinfeld reunion episodes. My problem with it was that it was marketed as THE reunion special. Unless you were familiar with CYE, viewers really had no idea what to expect from this.

Channel 9 should really have just held out for another month or so until Curb is near the end of the series, then put it on as the Curb Your Enthusiasm: Seinfeld Reunion.

All of the best Reunion material is going to come at the end of the arc and as it stood last week, there were no guarantees we were going to see any of that one Ch 9. It’s that material that most viewers would be tuning in to see.

  8. Daniel says:

Channel 9 are showing 3 of the episodes with the Seinfeld cast. I think it’s a great idea for fans of Seinfeld who don’t watch Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I don’t know why they aren’t showing the 4th episode though. Perhaps that episode doesn’t have the cast in it much, or depends on other episodes’ to follow the story line?

Either way I think it’s a great idea of Channel 9.

  9. robert says:

i”m myself much bigger fan of Curb than Seinfeld.
And I’m deeply disappointed that Nine will not show the whole season 7.

Also the way it was marketed was simply disgusting, Curb is a fantastic series on its own and deserves all the respect and attention as it is.
It is mainly about Larry David, not Seinfeld guys, they are only the members of the cast here.

So anybody knows what will happen now?
Will there be more episodes from CYE or is this it?

  10. Dan says:

Being as edgy as Curb is, I am doubtful that Curb could survive ratings-wise on Channel 9. The series is getting a run on Go! every Sunday night. They’re a season behind, but I would expect they’ll run straight into season seven.

I understand season 7 is to be the last season of the show. I’d be okay with that, but after watching Jerry and Larry’s chemistry in the last episode with the middrift, it is disappointing to think we may not get the chance to watch them on screen together again.
