One of the admirable traits of Foxtel is that they are evolving their distribution platforms to roll with the advancements in media consumption. It hasn’t been anything too radical yet, but they have made their service available via connected streaming devices. Users can now subscribe to
the service via XBox and the T-Box. It was only a matter of time until their service cut out the middle man (or device, if you will) and made their content available directly via a smart TV instead of using an STB of sorts. That time now has a time thanks to a deal with Samsung.
Stephen Fenech’s TechGuide reports that as of April, viewers with a Samsung Smart TV will be able to subscribe to the Foxtel service. The number of channels on offer is yet to be finalised, but one would assume the service will offer a similar (if not the exact) range of channels as offered by XBox 360 and Telstra’s T-Box.
I still haven’t had the chance to play with a Samsung Smart TV, so I can’t determine whether they are a good product. It is great to see that they seem to be aggressively seeking content. While the shadow of the Apple TV looms large, it appears Samsung are heading in the right direction with their offerings.
